Buddhism And Science

Dear Friends,

We would like to give you an outline of the Buddhism in Science Project started as a World Center initiative at the Kassel Course last summer (2002).

About 40 friends came together from all over the world. There were no specific requirements for scientific qualification: just interest and motivation to benefit beings through achievements of science, interpreted and applied from the point of view of Buddha's teachings.

Everybody shared the insight that scientific breakthroughs of the 21st century will be based on non-dualistic methodology and applications, especially in biology, physics, medicine, and ecology.

It was decided to develop the project through the following initial steps:

1. Establish an archive of articles/books/quotations on Buddhism in science and make it available through the World Center (or some other specialized) website. Just recently we heard that the article archive in Schwarzenberg is starting to work along these lines, so we will unite our work.

2. Provide a discussion forum on moderm science from the point of view of Buddhism (it should be open to everybody interested).

That is how we were chosen to further coordinate this activity. We also received a special blessing from Lama Ole to do so. So far, we have successfully combined coordination of Lama Ole's centers in Bulgaria, travelling as teachers and translating his lectures and books with scientific research and lecturing. Our work has been connected with St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia and the American University in Bulgaria, as well as with private research and consulting businesses. We have been working in the areas of quantum physics, electromagnetic biology, medical physics, and systems theory. Along these lines, we are in scientific exchange with Schumacher College (UK), The Scientific and Medical Network (UK), The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (New Delhi, India) and Dr.Fritjof Capra (USA), author of "The Tao of Physics".

We would like to start a cooperation between the intercollegiate initiative and the World Center "Buddhism in Science" Project.

We would also be glad to answer questions from scientists on Buddhism in Science and provide feedback/consulting to students concerning, for example, their choice of future research areas, sharing experience, etc.

Wishing you all the best,
Emilia and Nikolai Neshev
