Starting A New University Group

If you would be interested in starting a Diamond Way meditation group on your campus, please follow the steps below. Feel free to contact us if the conditions fit for inviting a traveling teacher and starting a new group in your area.

  1. Contact your university to see what it takes to start a university-affiliated student group (normally in the "Student-Services Building").
  2. Is it possible to reserve a room on campus for a traveling Buddhist teacher to give a lecture? Many universities won't let you reserve rooms until you have completed all of the "student-group" paperwork, but what you can probably do (if this is the case) is speak with another group (e.g. 'Distinguished Speakers Committee', 'Multicultural Committee', 'Campus Diversity', etc.) to sponsor the event or reserve the room for you. Space in the university or public library may also be a possibility.
  3. If you can reserve space for a public talk, contact our traveling teacher coordinator to schedule the first lecture on your campus with one of our traveling teachers (Email: Karin@diamondway.org). Put "Inviting a Traveling Teacher to (your university and city)" in the subject line, and let her know when you would like the teacher to visit. The two of you will then work out the travel plan together.
  4. The first lecture on campus is normally a general introduction to Buddhism covering the three levels of Buddhist teachings, Diamond Way view and meditation, and how people in the West can integrate these teachings into their daily lives. All lectures end with a question and answer session and a guided Tibetan Buddhist Meditation. University professors looking to invite Buddhist teachers to speak in their classes can choose from a wide range of topics.
  5. After the first lecture, if the conditions are good for starting a new group, we'll give you the login name and password to get into the Members Section of this site. There you'll find all the needed information to help you get the group started (i.e. flier templates for traveling teachers and weekly meetings, press releases for advertising public lectures, contact information for ordering Karma Kagyu meditations, books, and videos, etc.).
  6. Another possibility would be to attend one of Lama Ole's courses to get to know him personally. Between meditation and teaching sessions, you could talk to him about your school and ask if it would be useful to start a Diamond Way University Group on your campus. If so, you could then contact Karin and schedule the first lecture. Check Lama Ole's Travel Plan for upcoming lectures in North America.
  7. Once registered, you'll be able to join the International Diamond Way Buddhist Network so that you'll receive all of the pertinent information on upcoming events around the globe and at local centers throughout North America.
